Independence Day. No other American holiday is more social than the celebration of our independence. It does not matter what religion you are or what part of the country you live in. It does not matter who you vote for or why you vote for them. On the fourth of July, all of that seems to fade away in the remembrance of our declaration of freedom and for all of those who continue to stand for what America believes in. Summer time seems to be the perfect time for fireworks, barbecues, family gatherings, swimming, beaches, and all the fun that everybody has on this national holiday.
There was nothing different about being at camp on the fourth of July. We are family and friends here celebrating day one of session three with good food, music and a camp fire. After fighting holiday traffic and getting checked in, campers had free reign of the camp. Campers mostly roamed the grounds winding up at the playground or arts and crafts. Around six o’clock we headed into the mess hall for an all American dinner of sloppy joes, french fries and loads of fresh fruit. After dinner we prepped for a fourth of July parade and then marched to the session's first camp fire with a grand opening and even some make-shift fireworks. It was a great way for campers and staff alike to spend a great American holiday together. The thing that is exciting for me is that we do not just get to celebrate a weekend; here at Camp Krem we have ten days.
